AI-Powered Creativity: A Webinar with Ross Patrick

Artificial intelligence is transforming the advertising industry. On Wednesday, January 22, Creative Director Ross Patrick, founder of the AI-powered agency XTRA BOLD, led a webinar for the Inland Empire chapter of the American Advertising Federation. He shared his insights on how AI can enhance creativity and streamline workflows.

The Importance of Writing

Patrick began by stressing the value of writing in the age of AI. Even if you are an art director, strong writing skills are essential for success in the field.  He introduced his "SMART Speak" guide, designed to eliminate redundant and flowery language from AI-generated text.  The guide encourages writers to be clear, specific, and authentic and to simplify sentence structure.    


AI for Visual Storytelling

Visual storytelling is another crucial aspect of advertising. Patrick discussed how AI can be utilized to create compelling visuals.  He showcased a project he worked on for a Nissan electric vehicle, where he used AI to generate pencil sketch storyboards.  He also explored the use of AI for generating images in various styles, including watercolors and pop art.   


AI-Powered Tools

Patrick discussed a variety of AI-powered tools that can be used to create advertising content. He recommended the following:

  • ChatGPT for generating text    

  • Midjourney for creating images    

  • Runway for animation and video production    

  • Meta AI for generating images and copy    

  • Suno for music production    

  • 11 Labs for voiceovers    



AI for Animation

Patrick highlighted the growing use of AI for animation. He identified Runway as the leading tool for this purpose.  Runway offers a variety of style storyboards and features that can inspire creatives.  It also allows for text-to-video animation.    


The Importance of Refinement

Patrick concluded by emphasizing the importance of refining AI-generated content. He cautioned against accepting the first draft and stressed the need for careful editing and revision. AI can be a powerful tool for creating advertising content, but it is critical to use it thoughtfully and strategically.

The webinar concluded with a Q&A session. Patrick answered questions from the audience on various topics, including the ethical use of AI, the future of AI in advertising, and the best AI tools for beginners.
